Finishing Strong: VSME Reporting for TANED Groep

Finishing Strong: VSME Reporting for TANED Groep

TANED Groep is a collective of leading Dutch companies in property finishing and renovation, comprising Element Breda Afbouw, L&L Totaal Afbouw, Rikkert Afbouwgroep, Rosendaal SchilderGroep, and Wessels Groep. Together, TANED delivers tailored solutions for large-scale construction projects, supporting the transformation of new and existing buildings with expertise ranging from wall and ceiling finishing to painting, tiling, and custom stonework.

Challenge

TANED Groep set out to align its sustainability goals across its portfolio of property finishing businesses. The company was initially subject to the CSRD, but the Omnibus Directive unexpectedly excluded TANED from scope. This regulatory change introduced uncertainty about next steps and raised the question of whether to continue preparing for CSRD compliance, pause reporting efforts altogether, or consider alternative approaches.

Navigating New Standards: TANED Groep’s VSME Journey

We delivered a tailored project to help TANED Groep address stakeholder expectations through the VSME reporting standard.

Here's how we did it:

Step 1: Set up the ESG Team

In collaboration with TANED, we formed a cross-functional team to coordinate sustainability data collection, stakeholder engagement, and reporting activities. This structure helped clarify responsibilities and brought together diverse perspectives from across the group.

Step 2:  Double Materiality Analysis

While the VSME framework does not mandate it, TANED undertook a Double Materiality Assessment to analyse both inside-out (impact) and outside-in (financial) dimensions of materiality. This process provided a comprehensive understanding of TANED’s sustainability impacts, dependencies, risks, and opportunities, which formed a foundation for future ESG management and reporting.

Step 3: Data Collection Preparation

As part of the data collection preparation, we collaborated with all participating companies to identify the most effective ways to gather relevant information. Together, we mapped which data points were already available, where additional collection efforts were needed, and which indicators posed the greatest challenges. This process laid the groundwork for meeting VSME reporting requirements.

Step 4: VSME Reporting Roadmap

Building on the collected insights, we designed a step-by-step reporting roadmap for TANED. The roadmap explains how to collect and organise ESG data, set meaningful targets and actions for each material ESG topic, and monitor progress over time. This approach enabled TANED to address stakeholder expectations and continually improve sustainability practices with the VSME reporting framework.

From VSME to Action: TANED Groep’s Energy Scan

After discovering gaps in energy consumption data during the VSME project, TANED Groep requested an Energy Scan to address them

Here's how we did it:

Step 1: Data Collection

We launched a targeted questionnaire and gathered detailed energy data from TANED’s facilities to understand the actual consumption.

Step 2: Usage Analysis

We analysed the collected data, identifying peak loads, standby losses, and key grid pressure points across operations.

Step 3: Opportunity Identification

We outlined the most promising efficiency improvements, cost-saving options, and relevant subsidies tailored to TANED’s needs.

Step 4: Action Planning

We provided clear recommendations to support electrification, grid readiness and alignment with EU energy transition requirements.

Results

With support from Good Growth Collective, TANED Groep established a clear sustainability strategy, actionable plans for energy efficiency, and improved ways to communicate progress to clients, partners, and stakeholders. This collaboration has enabled TANED to advance its sustainability initiatives while maintaining focus on core business goals.
