AI in ESG workflows: collaboration with the University of Amsterdam

Good Growth Collective partnered with the University of Amsterdam’s Sustainability Honours Programme to explore how artificial intelligence can be strategically integrated into sustainability consulting. This collaboration, made possible through our co-founder Bernd Hendriksen’s affiliation with the university, was part of the Honours Capstone Course, which connects students with real-world organisations to address pressing sustainability challenges. We contributed a case focused on enhancing ESG workflows through AI, inviting students to investigate practical applications and ethical considerations.

Under the guidance of our consultants Mikael Ferev and Kevin van Dam, a team of Master’s students including Ilgin Kocak, Anastasiia Anikina, Anna Mingardi, Wanglingxue Yang, and Hilbrand Thijs developed a business case centred on integrating Agentic AI into ESG data collection and reporting. Their work emphasised the importance of identifying repetitive, high-leverage tasks where AI can deliver meaningful value while preserving human judgement in critical decision-making. The students also examined the environmental footprint of advanced AI models, advocating for selective use and prioritisation of energy-efficient alternatives.

Beyond technical innovation, the team addressed ethical risks such as algorithmic bias, privacy concerns and the need for transparency. Their conclusion was clear: human oversight must remain central to any AI adoption strategy. These insights align with our values at Good Growth Collective, where technology is seen as a tool to empower human expertise rather than replace it.

Collaborations like this reflect our commitment to bridging academic insight with practical impact. By connecting emerging talent with experienced professionals, we gain fresh perspectives that challenge assumptions and inspire innovation. We are grateful to the University of Amsterdam’s teaching team for facilitating this opportunity and look forward to future partnerships that continue to advance sustainability through thoughtful, responsible use of technology.
