Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR): The EU regulation demanding circularity for manufacturers and importers
Are you a manufacturer or importer of physical products? If so, you will almost certainly be affected by the ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation): new European legislation that imposes stricter requirements on how products are designed, manufactured and documented.
What is the ESPR?
Introduced in 2024, The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is the EU's primary legal instrument demanding manufacturers and importers think about the durability, recyclability, and circularity of their products from cradle to grave.
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of the Digital Product Passport. Product information such as materials used, origin, carbon footprint, circularity and sustainability will thus become increasingly transparent and, in many cases, will soon be required to be made available.
For many organisations, this immediately raises questions. Will this soon apply to my products too? When do I need to start addressing this? What data do I need to collect? And how can you ensure you don’t wait until the obligations are already upon you before taking action?
